Delaware Weather Guy Returns: Enjoy the Delaware Weather Weekly
It has been almost 6 months, but I'm back. It was a challenging road. I had some significant things take place in my life that needed attention. Yet, I have returned.
🌟 Main Story: Hurricane Season 2025 and the State of Delaware
The Hurricane season is upon us. According to the NOAA and CSU (Colorado State University), the country can expect upwards of 13-17 named storms, with 10 being hurricanes and 3-4 being above Category 2 status, which would bring it into major hurricane territory. Delaware's current risk of being hit directly by a hurricane is less than 2%.
Delaware is not new to hurricanes. Delaware can and has received remnants of various storms through the years. And since 1992, Delaware has seen at least five hurricanes make landfall within 50-100 miles of its shores. Yet, a "direct" hit has never happened. Yet, never say never when it comes to weather-related phenomena. It is with great hope that Delaware maintains this status through the 2025 season.
🌊 Side Story: Delaware's Microclimates
Did you know Delaware has distinct microclimates despite being the second-smallest state? The northern Piedmont region around Wilmington experiences different weather patterns than the coastal plains in the south.
Key Microclimate Zones:
Northern Piedmont: Higher elevation areas around Wilmington and Newark see cooler temperatures and more precipitation. Hills can create their own weather systems, with temperatures sometimes 5-10°F cooler than surrounding areas.
Central Coastal Plain: The Dover area represents Delaware's transitional zone, where continental and maritime influences balance. This creates our most "average" Delaware weather.
Southern Coastal Zone: From Milford to the beaches, maritime influence dominates. Summers are cooler, winters milder, and humidity higher year-round due to proximity to Delaware Bay and the Atlantic.

Precipitation Patterns: Southern Delaware typically receives 2-5 more inches of annual precipitation than the north, largely due to summer thunderstorm activity and tropical system impacts.
Seasonal Highlights: Spring brings our most variable weather, with temperature swings of 40°F possible within 24 hours. Summer features high humidity and afternoon thunderstorms. Fall offers our most pleasant weather with lower humidity and stable temperatures.
